CINEMANIA x YOUR FAVORITE BOOKSTORES

CINEMANIA is partnering with Montreal bookstores with a selection of ten films adapted from books.
Classics of literature, novels, comics, essays... books are a strong source of inspiration for cinematographic creation and CINEMANIA's 2021 program reflects this with ten book adaptations on the big screen!
Honoré de Balzac will be present twice during the festival, with an adaptation of EUGÉNIE GRANDET by Marc Dugain and an adaptation of ILLUSIONS PERDUES by Xavier Giannoli, which will be presented at the Festival's closing ceremony on November 14.
The writer Annie Ernaux also inspired cinema; two of her books were adapted for the screen the same year: PASSION SIMPLE, directed by Danielle Arbid. Her novel Je me suis faite engrossée comme une pauvre (“I got knocked up like a poor woman”) was adapted by Audrey Diwan under the title L'ÉVÉNEMENT. The film received the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
Selected for the Directors' Fortnight (Quinzaine des Réalisateurs) at the Cannes Film Festival and presented in the documentary competition at CINEMANIA, RETOUR À REIMS is a retelling of the autobiographical essay by sociologist and philosopher Didier Eribon.
Find all the books behind the films in our partner bookstores, La Librairie Gallimard, La Librairie Du Square and La Librairie Le Port de Tête.
