Gaétan and André share an apartment in Montreal. Short on money, they decide to sponsor a new Vietnamese immigrant. However, the multiethnic arrangement proves more challenging than expected.
CINEMANIA’s opinion:
A valuable document: first and foremost, because it’s one of the first collaborations between Louis Bélanger and Denis Chouinard (after DOGMATISME OU LE SONGE D’ADRIEN). The two friends began working in video in university, as the new format (promoted notably by the Coop Vidéo de Montréal) was growing in popularity and helping to democratize filmmaking. LE SOLEIL ET SES TRACES offers a rare study of the perception of Asian immigration in Quebec in the 80’s. The authors pull no punches in depicting the general indifference of the Québécois pure laine (“pure Quebecois”) to the trauma and suffering of the Vietnamese boat people. A sensitive, poetic and political short film that encourages openness to the world.
