In a ghost town, abandoned since a local mine closed, two now jobless men with a tumultuous past refuse to join the exodus and prepare to spend a winter in complete self-reliance.
CINEMANIA's opinion:
Another chapter in the collaboration between Denis Chouinard and Louis Bélanger. Chouinard’s priority is the image, for which, collaborating with the skillful Sylvestre Guidi, he shows real talent; Bélanger reveals a great sensitivity for directing actors. Together, they craft a film that is ambitious in both form and theme. As critic Jean-Philippe Gravel notes: “Mixing black-and-white flashbacks with an apocalyptic setting in colour (an abandoned town that two men officially declare an independent republic), this movie, shot on video and with almost the quality of an Eastern European film, confirms the talent and ambition of its creators, whose achievements would not stop there: suffice to mention that Denis Chouinard would go on to direct CLANDESTINS with Nicolas Wadimoff, and Louis Bélanger would direct POST-MORTEM” (Ciné-Bulles, 2001).
