Based on Ahmadou Kourouma’s autobiographical novel, Allah is not obliged follows Birahima, a boy who leaves Côte d’Ivoire after his mother’s death and is forced to become a child soldier in Liberia’s civil war. His friendship with Yacouba, a wandering soothsayer, offers the only glimmer of innocence amid the chaos. In this distinctive 80-minute animated feature, Zaven Najjar condenses the novel’s complexity while preserving its historical and philosophical depth. The film becomes a meditation on loss, friendship, and the brutality of war, featuring the voice of Thomas Ngijol.
