Senegalese guest-worker Amin, (Moustapha Mbengue) labours on construction sites in Paris suburbs. He supports a wife and 3 kids back in Senegal – periodic visits home are filled with joy and tenderness. Director Philippe Faucon, (César Best Film Fatima 2016) depicts daily life in Senegal with uncommon authenticity. Amin’s warmth and openness with friends and family (including fiery wife Aïcha), contrast with his reserve in his relationship with newly-divorced Gabrielle, (the remarkable Emmanuelle Devos) whose Paris home he’s renovating. Yet, among his fellow guest-workers in a crowded Paris hostel, he’s “the man”! Delving deeply into socio economic and cultural alienation, Faucon delivers a thought-provoking depiction of France today.
