Mathieu Malinski, (Jules Benchetrit) is passionate about music, something he must keep secret in the tough banlieue neighbourhood where he hangs-out with his pals. Soon, the gang’s petty burglaries land him in jail. Pierre Geitner (Lambert Wilson), director of the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique has other plans for Mathieu - he’s convinced that Mathieu can become an outstanding classical pianist and he enters him in the national piano competition. Rebellious Mathieu trains with a demanding teacher “The Countess” (Kristin Scott Thomas). And he’s also falling in love with a young woman. But he’s entered a world that’s difficult for him to decode...
