In 1766, a mysterious beast terrorizes the mountains of Gévaudan, claiming numerous victims, and no one can identify or kill it. People are afraid, believing it to be a monster from hell or a punishment from God. The case quickly takes on a national dimension and challenges the authority of the King. Knight Grégoire De Fronsac, a naturalist, is sent to the Gévaudan region to create a portrait of the beast. He's a witty, frivolous, and rational man, accompanied by the enigmatic and silent Mani, a Mohawk Indian. They stay at the Marquis Thomas d'Apcher's estate. During an event in his honor, Fronsac meets Marianne De Morangias and her brother Jean-François, the heirs to the most influential family in the region. Fronsac soon faces the hostility of influential figures in the area.
