1923. Georges (Romain Duris), hero of the 1914-1918 war, traumatized by horrific trench warfare, has spent five years decompressing and adventuring in Africa. It’s time to return home to France, to his mother and shell-shocked war-victim brother Marcel, (Grégory Gadebois). Acclimatizing to postwar life is a challenge, nevertheless Georges enters into a tumultuous relationship with sign-language teacher Helene (Céline Salette). Screenwriter turned director, Emmanuel Courcol, creates a highly-polished epic, beautifully shot and costumed. It’s a tender and compassionate study of the legacy and human cost of the Great War.
