A former legionnaire with nothing left to lose agrees to become the target of a human hunt organized to entertain a bored upper-class woman. Although director Lucas Belvaux has worked with adaptations before, this one stands apart for its deeply personal nature. He adapts his own novel, originally written with no intention of becoming a film, whose freedom of prose, detailed descriptions of landscapes and actions, and deep psychological insight had to be reshaped for the screen. The result is a gripping story that explores the loneliness of former soldiers and confronts the savage instincts hidden within human nature.
