Fanny's school trip to Germany and her meeting with her local pen pal will turn into a toxic and all-consuming love story. Claire Burger uses the universality of a first solo trip abroad during adolescence to explore the fragility of personality and how it can become dangerously fluid when influenced or controlled. But upon closer inspection, the filmmaker also captures the commitment of a generation, the radical nature of its actions, and the lack of deep reflection that results from them. Chiara Mastroianni and Nina Hoss provide well-regarded adult figures in contrast to the immaturity of their on-screen daughters.
