France
A nod to Spielberg’s classic Jaws, The year of the shark is inspired by pure American genre cinema, with a touch of typical French quirkiness and absurdity. We follow the trials and tribulations of Maja, a marine policewoman in the Landes region of France, who is investigating shark attacks. This puts the whole coastal community on alert, especially the local authorities. Revealed by their werewolf movie Teddy (Cannes 2020), twins Ludovic and Zoran Boukherma offer an unprecedented mix of the spectacular and the intimate. They create a portrait of contemporary France that is deeper than it seems, with an atmosphere worthy of De Funès’ Gendarmes series and led by a stronger than ever Marina Foïs.
