Anna is a violin teacher at a music-focused high school. Despite the opposition of all the other teachers, Anna drives through the admission of a student, Alexander, in whom she detects a remarkable talent. Committed, she prepares him for the year-end exam and neglects her son Jonas, who is also a violin student and a fervent hockey fan whom she brings into competition with her new student, and her husband Philippe. When she fails during their joint concert, the pressure mounts and she focuses all her attention on her student Alexander. Come the day of the exam, events take a tragic turn.
This is the German actress Ina Weisse’s second feature film (after DER ARCHITEKT, 2008). The AUDITION is a piercing film, precise and charged with repressed emotions: a kind of sentimental time-bomb that won’t fail to surprise the viewer. The leading actress Berliner Nina Hoss, previously seen in A MOST WANTED MAN and on television in the series HOMELAND, plays her best role. She embodies a merciless and obsessed violin professor. The portrait of a mysterious woman as well as a lovely film on music.
