Three French individuals with diverse motivations are invited to Cambodia in the late 1970s, hoping to meet and interview Pol Pot, the military leader who has held power for three years. They must navigate the line between reality and the finely crafted propaganda. By setting his narrative at the beginning of Pol Pot's dictatorial regime, the filmmaker plays with the audience's identification with the locals. We know about the ongoing genocide; they do not. We are aware of the regime's communication lies; they are not. Beyond the essential duty of remembrance—two million Cambodians were massacred—the film carefully dissects the torment of manipulation and the harsh confrontation with reality.
