Edith (the remarkable Sandrine Bonnaire), a quality-control manager at a textile mill in provincial France, is unattached, with an independent son that she visits infrequently. A sudden plant-closing upends her life, but she handles it calmly, choosing the unorthodox “adventure” of a position in a factory in Morocco rather than vegetate on unemployment insurance in France. She’s the only employee to do so and finds herself labouring under distressing conditions in a foreign land, shunned by management and fellow workers alike.
We’re on the edge of our seats, re-living her initial harrowing experiences in a fascinating country. Can she tough it out alone and adapt, without family, friends and a fulfilling job?
