The rise of Charles Aznavour in the 50s. From cabaret singer, to anonymous lyricist, to official composer, to glorious crooner, he would go on to become the world's most acclaimed French-speaking artist, through sheer hard work and resilience, until his death in 2018. Tahar Rahim astonishes and excels as the young Aznavour, in a film about the artist but also about the importance of his entourage (and for Aznavour, what an entourage: Édith Piaf, Juliette Gréco, Gilbert Bécaud). By setting the mainstay of the story in the 1950s, the filmmakers avoid all the expected, except that of immediately wanting to listen again to the discography of the great Charles. The reconstruction of Paris at the time is masterful.
