On July 27, 2022, the Quebec movie industry learned of the passing of Mel Hoppenheim, nicknamed "the builder". He was 84 years old. Montrealers owed him, among other things, the creation of Mel's “Cité du Cinéma” and the founding of Panavision Canada. His involvement in teaching was also well known, with L'inis and the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema.

Deeply passionate about the seventh art, this man has supported CINEMANIA continuously since 1998. The Mel Hoppenheim Audience Award, which over the years has rewarded 24 feature films and just as many French-speaking filmmakers, among them Maïwenn, Lisa Azuelos, Kim O'Bomsawin, Albert Dupontel, Patrice Leconte and Olivier Assayas, continues to exist. Once again, spectators of CINEMANIA are invited to vote for their favorite work among all the titles presented in premiere (except for the Opening and Closing).
