Biography

Arnaud Desplechin was discovered in 1991 with his short film La Vie des morts. His first feature film, The Sentinel, was selected in Official Competition at the Cannes Film Festival – to which he has returned nine times in the course of his career. He then directed My Sex Life... or How I Got Into an Argument, which revealed a whole generation of talents. His actors are regularly recognized with the most prestigious awards, notably Mathieu Amalric’s Best Actor César for Kings & Queen, Catherine Deneuve with the 61st Cannes Film Festival Special Prize for A Christmas Tale, and Roschdy Zem with the César for Best Actor for Oh Mercy!. In 2015, Desplechin received the César for Best Director for My Golden Days; the following year his theatrical directing debut, August Strindberg’s The Father, enjoyed a resounding success at the Comédie-Française, to which he returned in 2020 with his adaptation of Angels in America by Tony Kushner. In 2021, he came back to cinema with Deception starring Léa Seydoux. In 2022, he then directed Cannes Competition feature Brother and Sister, starring Marion Cotillard and Melvil Poupaud and two years later he Premiered in Cannes Premiere with Filmlovers!, a love letter to cinema. He will release his new feature film Two Pianos in 2025, starring French rising stars François Civil and Nadia Tereszkiewicz after a World Premiere in Toronto Film Festival in Gala section.
