Manon Barbeau a œuvré pendant plus de trente ans comme scénariste puis comme réalisatrice de documentaires plusieurs fois primés. En 2003, elle fonde le Vidéo Paradiso puis le Wapikoni mobile en collaboration avec le Conseil de la nation Atikamekw, le Conseil des Jeunes des Premières Nations et le soutien de l’Assemblée des Premières Nations du Québec et du Labrador. Le Wapikoni mobile, est un studio ambulant de créations vidéo et musicales destiné aux jeunes des Premières Nations qui y ont réalisé plus de 1300 films récompensés dans des festivals prestigieux à travers le monde. En 2007, Manon Barbeau fonde Musique nomade qui offre ateliers d’enregistrement et rayonnement aux musiciens autochtones et à ceux de la diversité. En 2014, avec une quinzaine de partenaires internationaux, elle fonde le RICAA, premier Réseau International de Création Audiovisuel Autochtone. En 2017, le Wapikoni devient partenaire officiel de l’UNESCO. 

Manon Barbeau has worked for over thirty years as a scriptwriter, then as a director of award-winning documentaries. In 2003, she founded Vidéo Paradiso and then Wapikoni mobile in collaboration with the Atikamekw Nation Council, the First Nations Youth Council and the support of the Assembly of First Nations of Quebec and Labrador. Wapikoni mobile is a mobile video and music creation studio for First Nations youth, who have made over 1300 films there, winning awards at prestigious festivals around the world. In 2007, Manon Barbeau founded Musique nomade, which offers recording workshops and outreach to Aboriginal and diverse musicians. In 2014, with some fifteen international partners, she founded RICAA, the first International Network for Indigenous Audiovisual Creation. In 2017, Wapikoni became an official UNESCO partner.

In 2014, Manon Barbeau was named Officer of the Ordre national du Québec. She received the Albert-Tessier Award, the highest award for cinema in Quebec. In 2017, Manon Barbeau received the Order of Canada for "her cinematographic achievements and dedication to First Nations youth". She was named Chevalière de l'Ordre de Montréal for her cinematographic career and social involvement, Chevalière des Arts et des Lettres de la République Française, Mentore de la Fondation Trudeau and in 2018, she received the Ordre des arts et des lettres du Québec and the Unesco / Madanjeet Singh Prize for the promotion of Tolerance and Non-violence. In 2020, she received an honorary doctorate from UQAT for her life's work.

After serving as president of the Documentary Network and Culture Montréal, Manon Barbeau was elected president of the Cinémathèque québécoise in 2021.

In 2022, Manon Barbeau and Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette curate the travelling exhibition Vues du Fleuve, organized by BAnQ and Loto-Québec.

In 2023, a novel entitled "J'ai des cailloux-filles dans ma chaussure" is being written.
