Michel Marc Bouchard has written over 25 plays, translated into several languages and performed in some of the world’s most prestigious theatres and festivals. His most well-known works include Lilies, The orphan muses, Down dangerous passes road, The tale of Teeka, The coronation voyage, Heat waves, Tom at the farm, Christine, the girl king, The divine illusion, The night Laurier Gaudreault woke up, and, in 2021, Embrace. In 2025, he will follow up with A children’s party, produced by the TNM Foundation. Many of his plays have been adapted for the screen, including Lilies (John Greyson, 1996), which won the Genie Award for Best Motion Picture; The tale of Teeka (Tim Southam, 1998), which won the Gémeaux Award for Best Dramatic Work; The orphan muses (Robert Favreau, 2002); Heat waves (Sophie Lorain, 2005); Tom at the farm (Xavier Dolan, 2013), which won the Critics' Prize at the Venice Film Festival; and The girl king (Mika Kaurismäki, 2015), which won the Audience Award at the Montreal World Film Festival. The operatic version of Lilies premiered at Opéra de Montréal in 2016, with music by Kevin March. His adaptation of The girl king will be staged by the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto, with music by Julien Bilodeau, who also composed Bouchard’s new opera The beauty of the world for Opéra de Montréal.
