Artistic Director of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival since 2012 and Executive Director of the Cinémathèque québécoise since 2015, Marcel Jean is the author of several books on cinema, the most recent being Le Dictionnaire des films québécois, published by Somme Toute. Head of the French Animation Studio at the National Film Board of Canada from 1999 to 2005, the films he produced won more than 150 international awards, including the Golden Bear and the Crystal Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, as well as the Cristal for Best Short Film at Annecy. From 2006 to 2013, with the production company L’Unité centrale, he produced several films, including Joda (Theodore Ushev, 2012) and Arwad (Samer Najari and Dominique Chila, 2013). Director of the documentary program at the Institut national de l’image et du son (INIS) from 2012 to 2014, he also taught film criticism, history, and aesthetics at the Université de Montréal (1986–2013). He has directed five films, including the documentary État critique (1992).
