Mathieu Denis is a Montreal-based filmmaker whose work has been seen worldwide and has received numerous awards. Identity, history, and politics lie at the heart of his films. His first feature film, Laurentie (2011, co-directed with Simon Lavoie), premiered at the Karlovy Vary Festival and won the Best Film Award at the Raindance Festival in London. It also received the Grand Prize at the Les Percéides Film and Art Festival, as well as the Best Director Award at the Lumières Polaires Festival in St. Petersburg. Corbo (2015) was selected for the Toronto and Berlin Film Festivals, along with around sixty other festivals. Those who make revolutions halfway only dig their own graves (2017, co-directed with Simon Lavoie) won the Best Canadian Feature Film Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, received a Special Mention for the Crystal Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, and was awarded Best Avant-Garde Film at BAFICI in Buenos Aires. Mathieu has just completed The cost of heaven, which premiered in fall 2025 at the Toronto International Film Festival and won the Best Francophone Feature Film Award at Cinefest Sudbury. He is currently preparing the shoot of The Falling Man, a film based on the article of the same name by Tom Junod.
