Biography

After completing her studies in film directing in Paris, Renée Blanchar returned to Caraquet and got to work. In many ways, her career has been pioneering not only for cinema in Acadia, but also for the role of women in television and film. She was the first Canadian to be admitted, through a competitive entrance exam, to La Fémis (École nationale supérieure des métiers de l'image et du son), the prestigious French national film school. In documentary filmmaking, Renée stands out for the strength of her subject matter and her unique talent for revealing the humanity of the characters who carry her stories. Among her dozen or so works, The silence (2020) a landmark documentary tackles the sensitive issue of sexual abuse committed by Catholic priests in Acadia. A popular success and unanimously praised by critics, the film received numerous awards. Drawn by the narrative potential of television series, Renée created Belle-baie, the first series in Canada to be fully written, directed, and filmed in a French-speaking minority community. She made a notable return to television by writing and directing the series Le monde de Gabrielle Roy (2020–2024), inspired by the life of the acclaimed author of The Tin Flute (Bonheur d’occasion, 1945).
